Golden hour at luther Burbank Park, Mercer Island

Variety is one of the key things I look for in photography locations around Seattle, and Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island certainly has that. Wide open dock spaces (without any railings), old brick buildings, grassy fields, an off leash dog park and even a sunset beach, make this one of my all-time favorite locations.

Things to know before you go:

  • There are 2 parking lots so be sure to coordinate which one you're going to meet by as they are very far apart. Most of the action is in the North parking lot
  • Sunny summer days can mean parking headaches as the North lot fills up fast
  • There's a bathroom near the playground and tennis court.
  • Playground area for littles
  • The docks do not have railings which is PERFECT for photography but not if you are managing little people
  • The water is east facing so this could be a great sunrise location. The only west facing location is the small beach area at the tip of the park, past the dog park.
  • This location works at all times of year!

Big skies & a Pop of Color

One of the fun things about portrait sessions is that we don't have to settle for just one look, or one outfit. As the sun started to set we got some gorgeous colors in the sky. Maddie put on her next outfit with an amazing pop of yellow. I set up some additional lighting in order to capture the skies and make her pop against the sunset, which is something that natural light-only sessions just can't offer. We ended up with a completely different look to help fill out her gallery with variety and style.
